My friend in Pennslyvania gave me a bunch of beers; this is the last. The Militiia is my first foray into Artillery Brewing. I am using a flute glass and serving the beer at 44 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, two-fingered white head with poor retention. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is light straw with a light golden hue, charting at SRM 4, and somewhat hazy. The appearance of this Helles could be much better.
Nosing the glass, I smell crackers, floral, grassy, white pepper, lightly toasted malts, and malty sweetness. The beer has a light mineral/sulfur aroma at the end of the beer.
The sulfur/mineral flavors are noticeable with the first sip: crackers, malty sweetness, white pepper, lightly toasted malts, floral bouquet, grassy, white pepper, and light phenolic finish.
The beer's body is light and has medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is carbonic and slightly tannic, and it finishes dry.
The standard Helles has many more hops than I would prefer in this style. Overall, it is a decent beer, and I am glad I got to try it. I want to visit the Brewery and sample other offerings.
