A lighter, cask-conditioned version of our IPA, with just enough tingle to remind you how great it is to be in Maine in the summer.

20 oz. on cask at Liberal Cup's homebase.

Appearance: Pours a nice golden color. No head or lacing. It's on cask so it's still, too.

Aroma: A little citrus, some faint pine. Somewhat floral.

Taste: Taste follows the nose, but also kind of has a buttered bread note. I had a feeling a casked session IPA might be a little odd. Tasty, but some coldness might've masked some apparent flaws.

Mouthfeel: Relatively light. Summery IPA depth.

Overall: Glad I tried this, because I love this bar and I dig cask ale, but if I get this again it will probably be on cold tap. The cask kind of exposes that buttery weirdness, though it's not a dealbreaker.

On cask at the source.
Comes to the table a slightly hazy light golden color with a minimal white head. Aromas of earthy hops and bready caramel malt with a touch of fruit and English yeasty esters. The flavor is lightly bitter with earthy hop and just enough bready caramel to back it up. Light mineral and yeasty flavors with a touch of fruit. Light body with a light level of carbonation. Not a bad cask English bitter.

Nice golden amber color with a thin head on top. No lacing as the beer left the glass.

Had a hoppy nose to it, kind of pungent. Good smell, I am learning to like hops more and more.

Good overall flavor, lots of hops mixed with the bitters to make a good full flavor. Some buttery notes to make it a little chewy. Good flavor, and able to drink right off since it was cellar temperature.

Not a bad brew.

served in pint glass at liberal cup at cellar temp (as this is a cask-conditioned brew)
extremely nice amber color, reasonable head that fell to a stubborn layer of retention and left a thick sheet of lacing. butter and floral malt nose with some woodiness. taste was smooth and malty that crescendoed in bitterness that coats the back of the palate in an earthy and enjoyable fashion--strong, slowly diminishing finish. some woody (oak?) notes pull through in the taste too. this was one tasty bitter, especially as a fan of cask-conditioned brews. i'll have to swing over to hallowell again soon!

Hey, I am the first to rate this one! Had this last week in Maine, when we popped into Hallowell to get some beer. This was their only cask-offering that day, so of course, it was the first thing we ordered. What is nice about the Liberal Cup is depending on the abv, they serve beers in 20 oz. glasses, and that's what we got. Cloudy tangerine when pulled, it came topped with 1 inch of thick frothy white head. I thought the aroma was pleasant, typicaly grainy and husky. The owner/brewer was in, so I was able to ask after the hops used, which turned out to be US grown Hallertau...surprising! This was tasty easy to drink medium- mouthfeel. I thought it had all the elements it should have: sweet biscuitiness in the taste, a tangy finish that was slightly astringent.
