If a Man wanted to become a Pirate, often he had to prove his stomach capacity for Alcohol……..The test drink was usually Ale.

An intended Pirate had to drink a mug full of Ale BOTTOMS UP, hence the saying!!!!!

During the 17th and 18th century Pirates demanded and sought STRONG & HOPPY ALES that were robust enough to survive months out at Sea…

Every Pirate had a ration of 1 Pint per day.
