On-draught @ the brewery on their grand opening night. "Sour IPA." 6.5% ABV. Brewed with oats, wheat, lactose, Summer, Nelson Sauvin, Hallertau Blanc, Citra, Motueka, Lime, Tahitian Vanilla and Plum.
$9 for a 12oz pour.
Looks reddish peach in the candlelight the brewery favors. Head disappears quickly but was white while it lasted.
Taste is surprising...emphasizes remarkably authentic vanilla bean far more than I thought it would, accentuated by the coating mouthfeel. Plum is there too but doesn't imbue this with burdensome dark fruit flavour; it feels lighter and better balanced.
Hop profile is a mixed bag...I wouldn't call this a sour IPA personally given the relative lack of hop pungency and bitterness (not to mention the lack of actual overt sourness... it's barely sour at all). More a wild sweet ale given the prevalence of the lactose and vanilla bean over the mild hop presence.
Pins colada, pineapple, grape, floral notes, vague impressions of poorly defined tropical fruit, lime zest.
There's a lot bouncing around in this, and few flavours are as focused as its stellar vanilla bean, but somehow it feels cohesive instead of chaotic. Those after a sour IPA proper won't find it here, but those along for the ride will find it a terrifically odd but refreshingly novel brew.
Drinkable and enjoyable, but I don't know that I'd shell out $9 for another 12oz pour.
