Small but solid head. Super initial blanketing lace. Darker brown color where light does pass through.
Sweet smell of toffee and chocolate. Some deeply toasted pumpernickel to the nose as well.
The flavor is far dryer than the smell with a stronger hop presence. Fuller body than most Browns with a neutral carbonation level. Not very sweet despite the smell. Well blended toasted (pumpernickel again) malt with a significant bitterness, especially for the English version of a Brown Ale. Still, this is quite good.

On tap at the brewery.
Poured a lightly transparent black with neglibable head.
Aroma was very nutty and roasty.
Taste was distinctly like a dry stout. Roasted malts, caramel, hazlenut and very light hop notes.
I actually asked the server if she was certain she had served me the brown ale and she confirmed it was. If I had been served this as a stout it would have got a decent rating but it is nothing like an English Brown and I have rated it accordingly.
I am British and have tried a lot of British beer and this has the least resemblance to a brown ale I have ever encountered. When you are in the mood for a brown ale you do not want to be served a roasty stout.
