Collaboration with Equilibrium Brewery
Short Throw and our homies at Equilibrium Brewery; we love hip-hop. So when great minds think alike, they think of this: Spillmatic. As an ode to one of the greatest MC's and albums of all time, Spillmatic is a Triple IPA adorned with copious amounts of Strata, Galaxy, and Citra. Dry-hopped with the same varietals. Tangerine, pineapple, mango, and citrus notes dominate the palate and aroma, paired with a smooth, unobtrusive malt bill that allows this 10.1% abv masterpiece to be incredibly drinkable. Enjoy fresh!
"It drops deep as it does in my breath
I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death
Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined
I think of crime, when I'm in a New York state of mind"
—Nas, NY State of Mind, Illmatic, 1994

Spilt a pint can of it into a clear glass liter mug. Much strong hoppiness is now in the air
It's a very dense liquid, close to straw yellow in color. Much carbonation, head and glass lacing join the first impressions. Strong tasting from the beginning and with a bit of the high ABV at every stage, this is neither overly sweet, nor overly bitter. Again, for the ABV, it goes down dangerously smooth. The base malt brings a decent body and some sweetness, while the finish is mildly hoppy and dry. It's not the most complex taste in an ale out there, but it does taste good.

Spillmatic is a collab from two of my go to breweries. The Triple IPA is cloudy and more on the basic and hoppy side. It is very easy to drink given the ABV and doesn't lean on tropical flavors in its profile.

L: Poured from a tallboy can to a snifter glass. Had a yellowish color and an extremely cloudy consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.
S: A pretty good aroma of hops, citrus fruit, tropical fruit, and malt.
T: Tasted of a decent bit of tropical fruit (pineapple and mango, in particular), a tinge of malt (mostly in the finish; a very subtle presence), a good shot of hops (not overdone, but just enough), and a nice bit of citrus fruit (tangerine and grapefruit, in particular). This is a well done and focused flavor. A good mix of sweet and bitter.
F: A decent amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.
O: In general, a solidly well made DIPA. Drinkable.

This was the first beer from Short Throw that I found, as I bought it a few weeks back at Milk and Hops in New York City. Indeed, this hid the alcohol well as it felt more like a New England IPA than something Imperial. Lots going on in the taste here as this really hit the spot once it warmed up!
Not a bad pour to this as the liquid was murky melon with a nice, bubbly head that topped it off but wasn't too excessive. Lots of wavy, soapy lacing remained as this had a nice consistency to it and the head never fully went away. Not a strong aroma to this but a smooth, tropical feel stood out along with some tangy tangerine and grapefruit in there as well. Nice sweetness to the taste as a bit of exotic fruit and bubblegum entered the fray with a wonderfully body that had malt, but none that was easily discernible. Some dank pine and spicy tea could be felt in the aftertaste as this had a bit of a kick to it with some slight burn and slickness leftover in the aftertaste.
Booze? It's here and I felt it long before I tasted it on the palate as this had plenty of inherent strength to it. While this may be too herbal and acrid for some, this was a nice first impression by Short Throw as the sticky candy feel that was left in my mouth left me wanting another can. This was enjoyable and just needed a stronger aroma (and a date on the bottom of the can) to stand out from it's contemporaries.

16oz can. Poured out a cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It left sticky sheets of lace on the glass. It smelled of resiny pine, grapefruit, pineapple and toasted caramel. Sweet tropical fruit taste with piney bitterness and sweet caramel.
