16oz. Can served in a Spiegelau tulip. Pours one shade shy of black with an opaque clarity and a fizzy, mocha-colored head that quickly disperses into a tight band around the shoulders. Nose expresses rich chocolate, notes of maple syrup and a hint of char. Taste consistent with nose. Flavor profile is almost cloyingly sweet. I wouldn’t have guessed there was coconut in the mix if I didn’t read the description on the can. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a mild, even carbonation. Overall, a nice pastry stout; however, nothing that others haven’t done. A little more roast to balance out the sweetness would improve this beer, in my humble opinion.

A pleasant surprise . . . a stout with adjuncts that, while mostly hiding the underlying stout did not completely over-power it nor fail to complement it. Of the three listed floors (coffee, maple syrup and coconut) only the maple syrup stood out to me. I am not a maple fan, but it seems to work well in stouts for me. This stout also maintained the characteristic of having a taste that changed (for me, at least) as it warmed. As a very slow drinker, I always enjoy this property in stouts as it make every sip interesting and many to stouts (again, for me), especially with added flavors, seem to be lacking on this front.
All in all, while I won't rush out to empty the shelves of four packs of 'Perpetual Night' (like I did of single bottles of Avery's TWEAK, the first time I had that, or Bell's Expedition in recent years) I do look forward to the rest of this 4-pack and will actively seek other offerings from Short Throw.

Appearance - The beer poured an inky black color with a short tan head.
Smell - The nose was like sweet hot chocolate.
Taste - The first impression was a wave of sweet chocolate. Notes of vanilla and coconut added sweetness. The distinct flavors of maple were hidden. The sweetness lingered, long term.
Mouthfeel - The body was smooth and sweet like a milk stout. The beer probably needed a bigger body.
Overall - This was very enjoyable.

I got a can of this beer off the single shelf from my local beer store located just around the corner. It poured an opaque dark with thin tan ring head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had molasses syrup, chocolate and roast notes. The taste was sweeter leaning and easy to sip. There was vanilla, molasses, chocolate and subtle espresso presence. The mouthfeel was fuller in body and had silky carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

Purchased for less than $8 from my local singles store Lizardville, can't remember how much i paid for it, i really hope i paid $6.66 though because that would be rad. i have covid so my sense of smell is slighty diminished due to a stuffy nose, but i haven't lost it entirely which is good. Just like the black label on the can, and the name of this beer perpetual night, that's how the brew poured out into my snifter, black as night, and a lightning fast brown head that receded even before i could put the glass down. well holy shit i can't smell this beer at all. i'm all clogged up. i can smell the clorox wipes next to me though so i don't know what that means. well this is a first. well i certainly can taste this beer. it's like a sweet syrup full of thick molasses and chocolate, it kind of slithers around my mouth and just slips and slides down my throat. there's also highlights of cherry and fig in there that kind of sparkle inside of it. It's a very sweet beer. Maple syrup is also on the label, and yes this also comes through more in texture than in taste. Mouthfeel is thick, with very little carbonation. Overall i'm going to have to give this beer another go around after i'm feeling better so look for a secondary review later.

Darkest of beers with only the smallest of tan rings around the glass. The nose is chocolate fudge, coffee, coconut is there. Smells very much like german chocolate cake. The taste is maple syrupy sweetness with coffee and chocolate a constant. Sweetness overwhelms. The feel is thick and coating. This beer is sweet...too sweet! It smells great but the sweetness makes drinking more than a few ounces difficult.

Perpetual Night is the bringer of darkness; in the can and on the outside. The stout is big time pastry reminiscent of candy bars and a coconut pies. It is extremely dense and intense.

Drank from a one pint can purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
04/13/21
Served in a tulip
The syrupy, viscous, near pitch black body was topped by a small, saddle brown cap of froth that quickly dropped to a pencil thin collar. Minimal streaky, spotty lacing stuck along the front side of the glass.
The nose was outstanding. Rich chocolate notes came through big time, even though this beer shockingly contained none. Chocolate fudge or hot fudge perhaps. Good dose of creamed and sugared coffee as well. Quite sweet overall though not excessively so. Vanilla and sweet cream notes were also apparent. Toasted coconut was detectable as the beer warmed and really intensified later.
The flavor profile was just as impressive as the aroma. Huge chocolate fudge presence up front. Vanilla and lactose notes were again quite prominent. Cold brewed coffee was noticeable as well. Toasted coconut and more vanilla came through on the back end and carried into the finish. Hint of maple, but this was definitely the least noticeable of all the adjuncts. Some booze was noticeable here as well though not as much as I anticipated for a 12-plus percent ABV beer.
Excellent rich, creamy, full bodied mouthfeel. Super slick and smooth on the palate. The liquid contained a finely beaded, moderate effervescence that fluffed up really nicely.
Perpetual Night is an outstanding pastry stout that rivals anything by Tree House and other acclaimed breweries. Short Throw might truly be one of New England’s best kept secrets in the craft beer world but probably not for long.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with virtually no head, but a ring of khaki bubbles around the glass.Aroma of dark toasted malt, cocoa, coffee, coconut, vanilla and light maple syrup. Flavor is sweet, dark toasted malt, maple syrup, coconut, cocoa and vanilla with a touch of coffee, mostly in the very sweet finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess; decent carbonation despite the near still pour. Well, I'm a fan of pastry and sweet stouts, but this one is so sweet it's on the edge of cloying. This is what I might expect if maple syrup were added to a glass of stout, rather than the wort (or wherever they added it). Fortunately, the flavors are fairly well balanced with both maple syrup and coconut not too forward. The coffee is subdued at first but becomes a clear note in the finish. This kind of reminded me of the liqueur Kahlua, which is a sweet one too, although the coffee is a bit more forward in that liqueur. Glad this was more carbonated that the pour revealed. A dessert stout, no doubt.

A thick, syrupy dessert stout poured dense and opaque as night from 16oz glass into a tulip. Hugely sweet nose with maple syrup and a solid dose of coconut, very much like an Almond Joy mixed with traditional Hershey's chocolate. The palate follows the nose with sweet, syrupy maple and coconut, milk chocolate and vanilla. Unfortunately all of this syrupy sweetness, which turns this into a small-dose sipper, covers up whatever coffee flavors this beer had. Some roasted bitterness/char/espresso flavors would have been welcomed on this one to cut the cloying sweetness. Still, wonderful sweet flavors in small doses.
