A- Pours a black and tan color, and is thick/oily in appearance, with little to no clarity....beautiful! The head comes out without much of a whimper, however, it is super creamy looking, dense and what there is of it, it retains very well! As for the lacing, well there really isn't much of any, but rather a good swirl provides a thick oily film that coats the inside of the glass well, and leaves behind what could be small bits of pastry....interesting!
S- This has a very dry, Earthy aroma, that has bitter cocoa, dry peanut butter powder, burnt almonds, burnt cocoa nibs (100% dark), wood char, muted vanilla and unsweetened pie crust. After an initial taste, the aromas sweeten up a bit and more of a traditional PB smell comes forth, along with sweet vanilla pastry and better rounded chocolate.....again, this is interesting and complex, going from intense bitter char notes to sweeter more dessert like quality!
T- The initial flavors are of intense peanut butter, cocoa, raw dough tang that makes my mouth water, deep woodsy nuttiness, charred brown sugar, smooth booziness, dark chocolate and/or perhaps black malt usage, powdered peanut butter astringency, chocolate chip cookie dough, mocha coffee, flaky wafer cookie, and a finish that is lingering on the palate, slightly bitter, yet rounded out by a certain sweetness.
M/O- Full bodied, velvety smooth carbonation, dense flavors that are super intense at times, yet become subtle on another taste. As for the drinkability, this is very tasty, but after one glass I am pretty much done....good thing this is being shared! With that said, the alcohol is very smooth and well hidden for 11.9%....it does creep up on a guy though! Could bode well with a dark chocolate dessert of sorts or a beef/lamb dish......overall this is a very nice beer and kudos to Reverence for the effort!
