Purchased via online delivery as a 4 x 473ml pack from the brewery which cost just over $5 CAD per can. This is a single hop varietal DIPA brewed with Strata hops. Formally known as X-331, it is an experimental hop created in a lab field in Corvallis, Oregon by Oregon State University scientists who allowed a crop of Perle hops to open pollinate. The final result is a hop varietal with strong disease resistance, vigorous growing habits and complex aromas of cannibis funk, tropical fruits and grapefruit.
Colour: Hazy golden
Nose: Quite light, definitely some strong funky herbaceous notes, unripe pineapple, papaya, grapefruit juice and rosemary
Palate: Very light and fresh for a DIPA. Lighter elements of cannibis oils, grapefruit, melon, orange peel and toasted cereals with a medium zesty fruity finish
This is the first beer I've had from Willibald and with the hype they've been getting I was somewhat putting my expectations high. It doesn't quite meet them mostly because this is a very different DIPA then I was expecting. Its fresh, light and feels ready to crush compared to other DIPAs that I've had in the past. The herbal and citrus fruit mix is really fun though so this will be a fun one to enjoy over the Holidays!
