A classic American brown ale brewed with chocolate malt and a touch of lactose for a sweet finish.

South Shore Filthy Oar Brown Ale is described as being malty, with a touch of lactose. The beer fits that description. The beer at about 50F was poured from a can into a sham pilsner glass. The aroma is "beery", mostly from malt I suppose. The head is tan, and recedes fairly quickly. The body is relatively dark for a brown ale almost the shade of porter. The flavor delivers a good British brown ale roasty flavor, with just enough hop bitterness. The label says there is a touch of lactose. I really didn't notice it. The 5.9% alcohol is a little high for a typical brown, and the taste does have a slight alcohol edge. I'd say this is a very good example of a style that is rarely seen these days.
