Notes via stream of consciousness: This English style ale is brewed with "7 CHRISTMAS SPICES"! I'm going to guess that ginger is one of them! This year's batch is labeled at 8.1% ABV. It's poured a lightly hazy amber colored body beneath a short cap of antique white foam. The aroma very clearly displays cinnamon, juicy apple, and sweet malt. It appears that there's some nutmeg, allspice, and ginger there as well but that's only four so what are the other three spices? I'm going to guess clove is one so let's give it a taste... yes, I think there's clove in there as well. More importantly it's really nicely fruity with notes of apple and sweet red berries. That, along with the fact that it's a lighter and more caramelish malt makes it stand out from the crowd. It's kind of like a spiced cider that's been sweetened with brown sugar. The bitterness is held in check, which is great because the spices are enough to dry it in the end. Apple and cinnamon are the main notes in the lingering finish taking it back to where it began. Interestingly, and perhaps it's because it's spicy which helps to mask it, the alcohol only has a minor presence. It's there to help dry the finish but you don't really get it. The mouthfeel is smooth with a medium-light body and very fine-bubbled, moderate carbonation. Again, that works really well with the spicing because it doesn't accentuate it more than it needs to be. It's superbly balanced and I find it very refreshing and highly quaffable, particularly for a strong spiced ale.
