Twisted Gingers Brewing Co. "Nice Helmut"
$14.00 / 32 oz. growler fill from the brewery on 12 August 2020

I'm not sure what's up with this beer. On the website, and the receipt I got, it's called "Nice Helmut" but on the beer board it read "Nice Helmet" - and it's about getting your hair cut during the coronavirus pandemic, so "helmet" makes sense but...

On top of that it's listed as a "Hazy Midwest Style IPA ". I've never heard of a midwest style IPA and I think it might be a joke. OK, moving on...

It's certainly hazy, I'll give it that. It's quite cloudy in fact, and yellow gold. The head is bright white and creamy, and holds pretty well. The aroma is quite hoppy with notes of tropical fruit, resin, and pine. On to the flavor...

Well, that's a bit odd! It's got a unique resinous and piney, maybe more appropriately spruce or cedar-like, flavor to it. The tropical fruit remains with notes of tangerine, mango, berries, and lemon/lime. There's a lot of citrus pith to it and I wonder if real citrus was used in its production. Nah, probably not. The malt is basic, and gently sweet, and the bitterness is median to moderate. It's woody, shall we say, and a touch herbal ~ and then the fruitiness steps forward for just a moment before receding, leaving behind a combination of pine resin, mint, cedar, and apple in a short lingering, dry finish. There's a little bit of an acidic hop bite to it. I'm sure that the alcohol is helping to dry it out as well but it's not harsh at all, and to be honest, at just 7.5% ABV it shouldn't be.

In the mouth it's medium bodied, but it only seems that way I think because of all those extra proteins. Without those it might be more medium-light, I'm not sure. It's got a standard, but fine bubbled carbonation that in combination with all the extra proteins leaves it smooth.

Damn, I'm dumb, I just got the whole "midwest" thing ~ it's like a combination of a NEIPA and a west coast IPA... leaving it "midwest". And that's fine by me. I'm really liking this one. It's definitely unusual and I'm stumped on the hops. The woodiness and lemon reminds me a bit of Sorachi Ace, and there berry like note makes me think of Mosaic. Of course there's other tropical fruit and pine/spruce as well, so who knows ~ all I know is that it's good!
