Notes via stream of consciousness: New England style double India pale ale ~ excellent! Of course there's a great range to NEIPAs so let's find out which one this is. It's poured a cloudy golden color beneath a full head of off-white foam that seems to be holding quite well. The aroma is a combination of tropical hops and sweetish golden malt. It's softly citrusy and a little floral as well. The flavor follows with an interesting, almost vanilla note thrown in. Is it coconut? It's more malty and less citrusy & tropical than the aroma suggests. I'm finding apple, guava, soft pine, a hint of peach, and light orange. There's more to it than that but I just can't come up with specific notes. As is the claim with quite a few of these NEIPAs it's labeled as having "ZERO BITTERNESS" but that's not true. It's hard to tell exactly where the IBUs lay but it's between 25 and 40. There might be a little bit of "hop burn" to it as well but it's hard to tell with so much malt going on; and there is a touch of alcohol there as well (it's labeled as 8.0%). These things are, of course, good things as it keeps it from becoming too sweet. In fact, given what it is, I think it's quite nicely balanced. There's a short time where the malt lingers in the finish but then the bitterness rises and dries it out. The head has held up so far, although it's just a thin surface covering, and there's plenty of lace about the glass. It looks like one sheet wrapped almost all the way around. In the mouth it's full bodied, somewhat dextrinous (almost as if there was lactose in use, though I doubt it), and silky smooth. So where does it fit on the NEIPA spectrum? It's not a juice bomb for sure, nor is it herbal and piney. It's kind of its own thing, which is really charming. In the end I'm quite impressed with this but be careful, it's easy to drink and you don't want a velvet fist to the side of the head!
