Notes via stream of consciousness: So what is this? It's labeled as a "MIDWEST STYLE IPA". Ahh, I see, the label reads "THE 'NEW' STANDARD IN SOCIAL COURTESY CELEBRATED WITH A MERGER OF THE NEW ENGLAND AND WEST COAST STYLES." Is that even possible though? Well let's find out. It's poured a murky golden colored body beneath a full head of medium-dense off-whote foam that's got a touch of yellow to it. The aroma is citrusy, peachy, otherwise tropical (guava, pineapple, mango), and earthy. That says NEIPA to me, but OK. It's pretty nice and full so I won't complain! On to the taste... mmmmm... the peach comes through nicely, as does the mango and a kind of non-descript citrus. Guava's there, and soft nectarine, apple and a hint of pear, and pine and earth. I'm not completely sold on the west coast side of this but I understand it and I'll give it a nod. There is some bitterness to it, and once the fruitiness fades it's piney, earthy, and dry in the finish. Ahhh, a little bit of peach and nectarine remains. Maybe even some plum! Very nice. The malt is basic as would be expected, and sweetish but not sweet. I have to say that I have had NEIPAs similar to this, so although I'll agree somewhat with the west coast thing I see it as more of a NEIPA. Overall, however, it's got a lot of hop and hop fruitiness to it and that's all that really matters, right? In the mouth it's got a lot of body because of all the extra proteins, and it comes off as medium-full. A moderate carbonation leaves it smooth. The head retention could have been better, and most likely would have been with more carbonation, but the trade off in mouthfeel and reduced carbonic acid from C02 is well worth it. I should note, however, that the lacing was quite good, so there's that. In the end I've really enjoyed this beer and it's another of those "Damn, I should have bought more" beers.
