Appearance: Clear, brown with garnet tint. Thin khaki head with short retention. No visible carbonation.
Aroma: No hops aroma (style appropriate), toasted malt, dark fruit, with hint of caramel. No burn aromas.
Flavor & Aftertaste: Alcohol mildly noticeable. Herbal spiciness. Toasted malt with some dark fruit hidden in there. Restrained bitterness. Medium sweetness.
Mouth-feel: Full bodied with a soft mouth-feel. Low astringency. Medium length finish.
Overall: A respectable Doppelbock style. These can be pale or dark versions. This one is a dark version, so it leans on more toasted flavors. Very hard to find fresh, locally made Doppelbock in my state of Georgia, so I am very appreciative that NoFo Brew Co. made this one. It is solid version. Hits most of the style check boxes well. Head retention is too short; however. Rich and malt forward. No roasted or burnt flavors. Hints of dark fruit. Alcohol is perfectly hidden, but still slightly warming. Soft mouth-feel with a medium length finish. If they refine the head retention a little, they will have a wonderful Doppelbock. Try it if it's available when you visit - it is seasonal.
