Appearance: Cloudy, mahogany brown. Creamy khahki colored head with moderate retention.
Aroma: Roasted malt dominates, with strong coffee notes and hints of toffee & caramel.
Flavor & Aftertaste: Roasted malt, with coffee, toffee & caramel notes. Relatively sweet, but not cloying. Low bitterness, baker's chocolate.
Mouth-feel: Medium bodied, slightly drying. A little chalky toward to end.
Overall: This may be a love it or hate offering. If you are looking for a great example of the style, this will disappoint. The roasted malt flavors are bit high, but not unheard of & hide the yeast character. Compared to Weihenstephaner Dunkelweisse, for example, it is a darker brown, much shorter head retention and leads heavily with roasted malt flavors, coffee being prominent. Those darker malt flavors lend themselves to a more winter time beer. Bottom line: a tasty, different type of Dunkelweisse. Probably would not place in competitions because of the roasted malt character, but that also makes it more unique and enjoyable drink. All that said, it certainly does not taste bad or have noticeable flaws, just not a tight example of the style.
