Together with the authors behind the pilsner book 'Den nøgne øl' (Christian Andersen and Jens Eiken), we have recreated the world's first pilsner, which was brewed in Plzeň in the Czech Republic in 1842.

Krenkerup Ur-Pilsner is a classic lager brewed with high-quality ingredients. The authentic, clean and rich taste comes from barley that has been floor malted according to traditional regulations. The hops in the beer are the classic Saaz hops that contribute a persistent pleasant bitterness, and since freshness and bitterness often go hand in hand, Krenkerup Ur-Pilsner will be the perfect thirst quencher over the summer.

In order to increase the mouthfeel, the beer is brewed according to a Czech tradition - so-called decoction - where you take out some of the mash and "boil" it in lightly, after which it is added to the main mash again. It gives – when done correctly – a complex beer with a nice head of foam without necessarily adding sweetness to the beer.

Copenhagen 3/7 2021. 50 cl bottle from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. Black version of Krenkerup's usual design with the name in dramatic yellow.

Pours slightly unclear, pale yellow with a mid-sized white head. Fairly stable. Settles as thin, patchy layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing.

Aroma is medium intense and has a sweet malty odor soon overpowered by a more austere hoppy scent. Sweet pale malts. Grass, lemongrass, citrus. Slightly skunky.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, watery, tingling texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a light sweetness followed by a strong sharp bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingers for a bit. Finish is dry.

They do claim to have recreated the original Pilsner from Plzen. I will settle for that this is a decent Pilsner.
