Toms River Brewing "Irish Eyes"
16 fl. oz. can; the ink jet freshness dating is illegible
$5.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: I've never had a "session" NEIPA before, at least that I can recall. It's poured a milky golden body with an orange sheen towards the top where the glass is wider and the light doesn't pass through so easily. I can see some particulate dropping and settling on the bottom of the glass. The head is a two finger thick cap of pillowy white foam that seems to be holding quite well. In the nose I'm finding some orange, some floral character, and a little bit of yeast. It's not that bright but it's OK. I've had many pale ales that have had a stronger aroma, and lets face it, at 5.1% ABV that's basically what this is if it doesn't have a bright aroma. Maybe it's got a great hoppy flavor though so let's see... no, unfortunately I don't see that. It's citrusy, resinous, piney, and floral but the citrus isn't clear as to what the flavors specifically are. I'll call it a melange of orange and grapefruit with a hint of lemon-lime but there's also some peach and passionfruit in there as well. The malt is fairly dull and doesn't appear as anything more than lightly sweetish and softly bready. It's got a bold bitterness to it so it's got that aspect of an IPA, but in all honesty it seems more like just an extra bitter pale ale to me. To each his own; you might like it that way. Obviously it finishes dry and bitter; resinous and piney hop flavors linger. On the positive side the head retention is fantastic, and it's left some pretty nice lacing as well. In the mouth it's medium in body and velvety smooth across the tongue. I can't get behind this one. I find it lacking in aroma and flavor, overly bitter for what it is, and very much out of balance. It's rounded, meaning that there are no edges sticking out, or flavors that cut through more than others, but it's like a deflated ball that's still got enough pressure to hold it's shape ~ it's still a ball but it has no bounce.

Pours hazy yellow with a medium white head. Aroma is hop floral and pleasant. There's a bit of citrus in there too. Taste is mild hoppy and a little grapefruit. Feel is decent but perhaps a bit thin. Overall it's a nice drinkable IPA.
