I'm not sure if I ever upscored an Austrian beer this much and I'm not sure if I ever will either. But this Bock from Gold Fassl (Ottakringer) is not bad at all. Kind of reminds me of the impression of O's Wiener Lager when I had it for the first time - and the letdown that came with the second try, still overwhelmed. I think this also falls into the same category.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it feels quite alright actually and I personally find nothing wrong with it - hence the score. It is like how a nice bock should be, dense, hoppy, sweet and slightly boozy. Smells nice, tastes nice, that bready, biscuity thing that stronger ales have, but you still have a lighter body - which somehow is still malty and sweet enough. And boozy, don't forget it. Was Bock supposed to be a festival beer? Well, I can imagine how it could make people have a good time. It is one of the few things Austria can make well.
