Tucked away in Ketchikan, Alaska, Baleen Brewing is the kind of unpretentious, small-scale brewpub that makes a beer geek’s heart skip a beat. This place isn’t trying to be flashy—it’s just a cozy, no-frills spot with a vibe so chill you’ll want to settle in for hours. It’s the sort of joint where you can kick back, sip something stellar, and feel like you’ve stumbled onto a local secret.
With just a few tables, Baleen keeps things tight and personal. You’re not fighting for elbow room in some overcrowded taproom. The dog-friendly policy is a stroke of genius—nothing pairs better with a cold pint than your pup chilling at your feet. It’s a small touch that makes the place feel like home.
Now, let’s talk beer. The tap list is short—maybe six or eight handles—but don’t let that fool you. What they lack in quantity, they make up for with a lineup that’s thoughtfully curated and impressively diverse.
The bartender’s a gem, too. Guy knows his stuff—whether it’s breaking down the malt bill on their amber ale or suggesting a pour that’ll match your mood. He’s not just pouring pints; he’s practically a beer sommelier, minus the pretension.
Baleen’s the real deal—a tiny Ketchikan brewpub that punches way above its weight. It’s not just a stop; it’s a destination. Get there, grab a pint, and bring your dog. You won’t want to leave.

Basically just a bar with a few small 4 or 2 person tables that form an additional row of seating, then a room separator to keep the space separated from a coffee shop...all of which is in a big kind of industrial space with concrete floors, a very high ceiling, and a second floor kind of loft space. It is a block or two from the water in downtown (such as it is). Bartender (who I think was the head brewer) was very nice and very knowledgeable. They had about 7 beers on tap,and a good diversity of styles: apa, ipa, imp stout, czech pils, alt, dubbel, kellerweis, I had the alt and it was very good. The space wasn't anything to write home about and I was in a hurry, but I would have enjoyed staying for more, if I had time.
