One of my favorite stops in a trip of great stops.
A 20 min S-Bahn ride from Central Station and a 5-10 minute walk brings you to this unpretentious 400 year old brewery. Like much of Munich, this is a wonderful blend of old and new. The Munichers live with their history in a wonderful balance of respect and pragmatism. Old things are changed when they need be but seemingly never merely for the purpose of cosmetic change, and things aren't kept as they were if that doesn't work anymore merely to be quaint.
We were there on a Sunday evening. It was fairly quiet. Some couple drinking beers and chatting, a couple of multi-generational families in for dinner and few lederhosen folks, probably there for some post Oktoberfest compression time.
Anyway the food and beer here are a home run. The atmosphere is pure Germany. The dining room is very old with a lot of wood. The benches and tables obviously have been around forever, but peaking into the kitchen, one sees it is wonderfully modern and up to date.
The serve 5 or 6 types of beer here, more than most Munich area breweries. One of the beers is a light beer but even with that they still have a nice selection. The food is fantastic. I recommend either being German, having a German friend come with you, or knowing how to speak some German as they don't do English here.

The Maisacher Bräustüberl is located in the town of Maisach, which is reached via S-Bahn 8 in about 20 minutes from the München Hauptbahnhof. From the S-Bahn station it is about only 10 minutes on foot to the Stüberl. The place is very rustic and original (German-wise) with a few different rooms to accomodate diners and drinkers. I sat in the main room upon entering, at an old wooden table. Old bier mugs, steins, bottles and other related paraphernalia decorate the place, along with old pics, paintings and dried hops hanging from the walls and beams. Service was prompt and friendly. The team concept is used here (and at other places in Germany). You may order with one person and be served your food or bier by another....no probs! They served about 6 of their own Biers here, and the ones I sampled were quite good, the Pils being quite tasty. I had 2 Weisswurst with Brezn, and it really hit the spot. A varied menu with very reasonable prices does the trick. Worth a short ride from München!! Zum Wohl!!
