So which category is it? The label says it's a triple hazy IPA, with an ABV of 9.0%. Does that make it a New England style IPA, because of the haze, or an Imperial IPA because of its potency? The choice to categorize this as an Imperial IPA was made sight unseen and solely on the ABV. Obviously, this straddles the categories, being both hazy and strong. A pint can is cracked open and all of its contents fit easily inside a clear glass liter mug. There's some white foam produced by the pour, but it's not excessive. It reduces evenly to a sustaining slightly off-white head. The brew's color is dirty blond-amber and it's opaque, without being murky. The aroma is oaty and softly hoppy. Drinking it, there's a little more hit of the alcohol than would be ideal. But, it has a relatively high ABV and that’s why it's an Imperial IPA. Although there's that taste and mild burn of the alcohol, it manages to go across the palate and down the gullet rather smoothly. It's sweet, maybe butterscotch sweet and the alcohol actually assists that characteristic. It certainly has hops that contribute to its flavor, but they're mild and not at all bitter, earthy, nor drying. It's more like they fill out the overall one dimensional flavor, rather than provide a distinct counterbalance. The glass lacing is nicely stratified. Maybe not world-class, but this is outstanding and worthy of a try and another Beer Advocate's opinion.
