The clouded yellow with a bit of deeper gold in the depths typical to the style, it certainly looks like a hefeweizen. Heavy cascading on the pour forms a head 2-3 fingers tall. Retention is decent, but the big head's gone sooner than I'd expect. Only a tight foam remains, and activity does remain constant in order to keep it. Just a bit of spotty lacing is left behind.
Curiously, there's more of an apple peel and citrus tone than the banana and clove I'd expect, especially from a German presentation. They're there, but subtler than they should be. There's bit of bread in here and the wheat is definite, but it's otherwise more pithy and tangy than anything. The particular yeast is also evident.
The yeast seems to become the dominant factor in the flavor with the green apple peel and woody, pith-like flavors following along with an herbal note. Then the wheat comes in more like it's straight off the stalks than baked, more raw than "bready." Clove is certainly not lacking, but the banana-like flavors attributed to the yeast are extremely subtle. A bit of something mildly sour and lemony comes through in the finish.
The mouthfeel is good. This is a light-bodied beer, yet it still retains some heft and depth. It does have a crispness to it but never refrains from a pretty creamy smoothness.

This beer poured a cloudy yellow color and formed a huge foamy white head that left latticed lace as is slowly subsided. A medium amount of carbonation is present. An aroma of hops, lemon and pepper. The flavor was of hops, lemon, grain and a touch of pepper. The body was fairly light and the finish was slightly sweet and sprite.

A: The beer is cloudy and somewhat dark yellow in color with some hints of amber. It poured into a weizen glass with a perfect sized head that has good retention properties. A high amount of carbonation is visible from the rising bubbles.
S: There are moderate aromas of cloves, lemons, oranges and wheat in the nose.
T: Flavors of wheat are very prevalent in the overall taste. Like the smell, there are lots of fruity and slightly acidic flavors in the taste with notes of lemons and oranges and hints of bananas.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and a bit watery with lots of carbonation; there is a slight amount of dryness in the finish.
D: The flavors in the taste are rather strong so I wouldn't call it thirst quenching, but this beer is definitely very easy to drink and somewhat refreshing.

Another German beer to taste. 500 ml bottle, on to the beer:

A clean filtered, pale orange/fool's gold in my weizen glass at first. Pour the beer all in and there is some cloudiness. Almost looks like a dunkel weisse. Good head on top with good retention. The nose is a good one. There is a little banana with some shredded wheat and tangy lemon, lightly spiced with ground clove.

As in its flavor profle, it's lightly spiced with the wheat malt doing some lifting. Banana bread anyone? Mmmm. Hints gingerbread too. Slightly tart. Squishy carbonation at first, it becomes less springy and smoothens out.

This is a solid example of a German hefe, even two months after its sell by date. Not quite in the territory of tradtional German weizens, but better than the major American wheat beers.

Saw this for the first time at Whole Foods.

Pours a very hazy amber, lots of yeast in the bottle..fat head forms but disappears quite quickly with little lacing.

Smell is hugge wheatiness with some banana peel and a little bit of coriander. The taste doesn't differ too much- really just big big wheaty hefe here. I'm curious as to the designation of the style-- what is a festweisse exactly ? How does it differ from a hefe, if at all? Mouthfeel is quite crisp, but a bit heavier than the typical hefe.

Give it a go. It only has a couple reviews on here but i think it's def. an interesting hefe worth a taste.

Cloudy gold with a fluffy white head. Nice aroma of yeast, wheat, and banana, with some lemon. The taste doesn't quite follow through. All of the above is included, but kind of sour and watery. The massive amounts of carbonation does not help as it stings the tongue. Disappointed.

BBD 0f 02 09 07, so this is a little past prime.

Pours a hazed amber with 4+ fingers of cream colored head. Hazing never cleared, above average head retention & average lacing

S: Fruitty & phenolic notes, plus apple skins

T: Fruity & herbal hop notes up front. Some apple skin notes as this warms along with apricot & plums, plus some peppery hop notes. Finishes with hints of apple pie, a bit of dryness

MF: Medium bodied, juicy with low carbonation

Drinks okay, would try this again if I could get it fresher

Poured a slightly cloudy light golden color. One finger head which turned into a thin film after a couple minutes. No lacing.

Smelled of wheat bread and maybe even a little apple.

Very wheaty flavor with some mild banana present.

Good mouthfeel. Just the right body, not too thick or thin, with a good amount of carbonation.

A good, solid, drinkable beer. I could see having a few of these easily in one sitting. It almost bordered on a lager style beer. A nice choice worth having again.

This is a very nicely drinkable hefe with a bit less than the usual amount of spicy fruity esters one finds in a hefewiezen. This aroma is more bready than banana-clovey, but there is definitely some of that present as well. Carbonation is high and it puts up a big fluffy head. I had to pour in stages even though my pilsener glass (I know, I couldn't find my big, curvy weisse glass) has over an inch of clearance above the .5 liter mark. It is a very murky (I swirled) deep orange-amber color. The flavor is rich and bready with just a bit of spicy ester that lingers through the finish. All in all, this is a very nice brew, showing some disinctiveness in a claim of very old brewing tradition.

Appearance- Slightly cloudy amber/apricot color with a very fluffy white head. Head has some lasting power, but completely disappeaers within 10 minutes. Leaves no lace. LOT's of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Should probably be cloudier.

Aroma- Very sweet for a hefe. Smells of fruit preserves with some wheat malt aroma. Maybe just a hint of banana. No clove at all.

Taste- Very wheaty, and almost nothing else. Maybe just a touch of lemon, but imagine drinking a liquid, carbonated wheat-thin. Yeah....it's like that.

Mouthfeel- Mouthfeel is very interesting. Body is about right. The carbonation level on your tounge starts out faily high, drops very quickly, and then seems to kick back up into high gear. It really accentuates the wheat.

Drinkability- It's worth trying just because it's so darned interesting with the excessive wheatiness and weird mouthfeel. But as a wheat beer, it's not very representative of the style.

Pours with a three finger white head that vanishes without a trace of lace. Cloudy amber color and a ton of yeast in bottle. Light-medium carbonation and light-medium bodied. Lemony nose. Starts sweet, hints of lemon and yeast, no wheat clean finish. $1.89 for a 500ml bottle from Hi-Time Cellars Costa Mesa, Ca.

Poured in to my Paulaner Weissbier glass this is the picture perfect glass of Hefe Weizen. This is a cloudy apricot colored ale with a 2-inch tall puffy white head.

Smell isn't quite so perfect as the appearance. Smell is mostly medicine and cloves with sweet soft wheat malt aroma. There is a mild amount of spiciness in the aroma but it really isn't very much.

Taste is neutral with a slight amount of sweet and sour to it. Mostly the flavor here is neutral wheat beer flavor without a lot of complexities. Nothing breaks the very neutral wheat beer flavor except a little bit of tartness and faint cloves. Average VERY average and I am being at best kind.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Certainly an inoffensive beer but this one just plays it a bit too safe. There are at least 100 more wheat beers from Germany that are better in drinkability and just as many with more flavor. OK to add to your tried it list but if you just want a good Hefe Weizen Baltika #8 is a lot more beer for your dollar.

Pour: .5L bottle to weizen glass, exp. date clearly marked. Has a slightly cloudy honey colored body with a huge three finger white head that's fluffy and billowing and goes down in about 2 minutes to a thin coat over the top of the beer and clings to the glass.

Nose: Very faint aroma. Too faint. Light peach smell, lemon, and yeast.

Mouth: Lemon flavors with a bit of a chewy malt presence up front. Finishes very dry with a light hop bitterness and spicy alcohol. Excellent full mouthfeel the whole way through.

Bottle purchased at Binny's in Naperville. Bottle dated best before 8/27/06. Good sign since some of these hard to find German beers could have sat on a shelf for years. Not this one.

Pours with a big spritz carbonation that dissapears like it is cola. A bit odd. Leaves a wispy white lacing effect on top. Off-gold color demonstrates the fact it is not filtered.

Not much of a nose here...nope..execting banan or clove...not there. A little yeasty funk, but thats about it for the nose.

Nice ciric bite on entry that is classic to the style. Flavors of banana and a hint of clove, lemon(?) or is it put in my mind by tradition of a lemon slice? A little grainy feel, again the yeast funk is there. A very authentic and unrefined flavor which I enjoy - a bit wild. I keep going back and forth on the flavor rating...compared to other hefes....it is a 4.

Biting dry/tart finish. Nice - the finish really adds to beer. Lacks a full flavor, but the effect of the unique profile and tart finish works out.

Appearance: Cloudy mustard-to-orange with a positvely billowing frothy, pocked, pillowy head with great retention. Eventually implodes, leaving chunks and bergs stuck to the glasswall. Carbonation is quite odd; a bit large, but it also appears to bounce around the glass at angles -- I've never seen anything like this before. Cool.

Smell: Very nice. Clovey and spicy, with a big, chewy, overripe banana body, hints of citrus and papery wheat.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Wow, this is something. It's two, two, two beers in one; pure, dense, sweet spiced banana bread up front, tart refeshing lemon spritzer in the finish. I've never seen a beer so black and white start versus end. The mouthfeel is OK, thin and a bit sharply carbonated; think seltzer.

Drinkability: Great. You really can have your cake and drink it too with this one. Big ol' flavor, but cleaned up in the end with hops and lemon. Satisfying and refreshing, and a good deal to boot -- what's not to like?
