Alewife and I had hit Millys for lunch today (Sat, 20DEC08), before we did some late Christmas shopping. Afterwards we hit M's for a "refresher". Had read about the Helles Bock in Yankee Brew News, and was happy to see it on tap (though I was bummed that it was at the expense of the Dr Hoppenstein DIPA). Alewife, btw, went with a Scotch Ale...
Poured into a 12oz tulip, the bier was a muted golden color, with a slight bit of cloudiness. The head was creamy and white, starting at 1/4" but ebbing to a fine, thin layer. Lacing was decent, leaving a nice trace behind. The aroma was on the mild side, with some breadiness coming through along with some fruity tones. Mouth was a middle of the road medium, with a fair smoothness on the tongue.
Flavor was lightly sweet, with some biscuity malt hitting the palate at the outset. Fruitiness then settles in, with green apple and pear leading the way. The finish is crisp, clean and dry, with some floral hopping making a play. Decent, overall, though I think the fruit aspects are too dominant. I'd like to see more malty sweeteness somewhere along the line.
Prosit!!
