I am trying this beer off the tapper at The Daily Growler in Powell, Ohio as part of a six sample flight. It poured an opaque dark with very thin egg shell white ring head that left a spotty lace. The scent had nice roast and molasses notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with strong dark chocolate, vanilla, roast notes with very subtle hints of anise. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had poor carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.

12oz can poured into a tulip.
Pours almost black; fluffy khaki head that falls leaving nice retention and lacing.
The aromas are malt forward. Some chocolate. Mild hints of red berries and juniper berries.
The flavors are bold but balanced. More chocolate. Hints of vanilla. Some milk. Hints of smoke. The juniper berries are on the subtle side but ultimately leave their mark. Lager yeasts do their thing. Malts do their thing. Subtle sweetness. Low bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden and goes unnoticed. I'd consider this one dangerously drinkable.
Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy, thick and smooth.
This is a nice brew. The juniper berries are balanced and don't dominate, and I mean that in a good way. It might not be a classic and traditional example of the style, but it still ultimately stays true to the style. It's enjoyable and fun to drink. I like it.

Showing that even the classic styles of beer can use an update from time to time, Rebel Mettle Brewing turns to the traditional German black lager and the nontraditional juniper berries for a unique twist in taste.
Volume speaks volumes as its pours on the very dark side of brown while floating a creamy light mocha froth. Its roasty, toasty and slightly smoky scent is nearly porter-like with a hint of pine and gin. Sweeter on the tongue, a dry nougat character highlights a moderately sweet taste of caramel, honey and chocolate.
As the flavors unfold, the middle palate shows a firm maltiness with lingering sweetness and a billowing of coffee, char, cocoa and roasted nuttiness. Burnt toast and campfire trail into a late palate of a continued but dry porter-like taste and texture with a pine flavor that seems of America's Pacific Northwest hops.
Medium bodied and quite full compared to traditional Schwarzbier, Volume finishes roasty-sweet and with a botanical gin-like spice once more. A hint of pine and currant each seem fire grilled as they bleed into to the toasted elements of the grains quite well. Volume is simply a refreshing dark beer with both curiosity and intrigue.

Smell - almost like a burnt grain smell
Taste - roasty pretty toasty grains

Crowler from the brewery.
Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a khaki head, nice lacing.
Roasty malts with a hint of smoke and sweet note that really hints the spot.
This is a nice twist to the traditional Schwarzbier.
