Appearance: dark brown, slightly hazy (unusual for the style). Low to moderate beige-brown head with medium retention.
Aroma: dominated by American-style hops (grapefruit, bergamot?), with low background notes of dark, lightly roasted malt.
Flavor: follows the aroma, though the balance leans slightly more toward the malt (melanoidins, coffee, light caramel), while hops remain dominant overall. The finish is distinctly bitter and dry.
Mouthfeel: medium to medium-high body. Medium bitterness provides excellent balance. The beer is rich and velvety, yet still drinkable and not cloying. Low carbonation. A gentle alcohol warmth in the finish.
Overall: a very tasty beer, with excellent balance between body and bitterness, as well as between maltiness and hop character. An exceptionally interesting combination and style. It seems to fit the style well, aside from minor technical deviations. However, I must admit I have limited experience with Black IPA.
