For our next seasonal release of our Avalanche Hazy IPA series, our brewers chased down hops from the Land of the Long White Cloud.

New Zealand hops Motueka, Wai-iti and Riwaka are the stars of this release, giving it distinctive melon and tropical characters with a herbaceous twist.

As with every Avalanche release, the hops are front and centre, and supported by meticulous use of malts to give the beer moderate bitterness and a full body.

From Christmas 2022, drunk in February 2023.

L: Bright, golden yellow but quite clear for a supposed hazy beer - marked down somewhat as a result. Thin bright white head. Moderate carbonation up the middle of the glass.

S: Harsh pineapple, grapefruit, menthol, shampoo.

T. Bitter lemon and over-fermented pineapple. There's a warming sensation far greater than expected from a 6.7% ABV beer and so I suspect hop burn contributing here. I've realised of late that the menthol/over fermented/shampoo taste can be enjoyable if there's a fullness to the body and sweetness to the hop and malt base, but where the malt base is clean and designed to showcase the hops, it comes out as an unpleasant, bitter, shampoo-like taste. This one is doing exactly that.

M: Mouthfeel shows moderate carbonation; there's quite a bite as the beer goes down and my teeth and tongue know the beer's been there. Not unpleasant in any way, though.

O: So it looks like I'm back on my shampoo-beer hobby horse. I've enjoyed a few diesel-like hazies in recent weeks but this weekend in particular have come across the less pleasant side of that coin. I think a fuller body and a little bit more sweetness in the malt base would fix this, but I'm just some idiot on the internet and I'm sure the brewers would happily tell me so!

Cheers!
