An opaque, deep brown abyss. A thin ring of beige form bubbles up at the end of the pour, but dissipates almost immediately back into the darkness.
The nose on this hits hard with dark fruit, really characterizing that port barrel - notes of prune, apricot, & toffee are the headliners, while undertones of chocolate and blackberry bring up the rear.
The Port barrel again is the star of the show on the palate - Vanilla & fig are strong out of the gate, with a dry, toasty nuttiness on the mid-palate that continues through to a mildly bittering finish. Dark chocolate and baking spices interplay in the background with time and temp to add more complexity to the profile.
Medium weight to the mouthfeel, perfect for the style as well as for the barrel treatment. Port casks don't generally lend themselves as well to heavier-bodied barleywines in my opinion. Medium bitterness throughout, and incredibly well-hidden gravity. While it is a warm drinker, there is not a single bit of aggressive ethanol heat to suggest the ABV is 14+%.
