A Night In Tallinn

Not gonna lie - Raul had never heard of Tallinn up until this point. But if this is how they party there, well, I’ll be first in line to smash the next Piñata. I mean, it’s just nice in like, a nice way. A night In Tallin is the girl that shows up to the party - not in stilettos, and not in a push up bra - yet everyone still notices her anyway. Tallin is a subtle beauty that makes you think about long term things - not just a little pop that won’t make the final cut. I say party while you can, but also remember what got you where you are and proceed from there.

Very dark, nearly opaque brown. Handsome pile of dark beige foam in the snifter. Pleasant malthy aroma with canned plums. Moderately sweet, plenty of malt, but balanced with the hops. Not overly bitter either. Some chocolate notes, dark berry and date. HInts of burnt sugar with a dry finish.

Overall this seems like the classic Baltic Porter flavors. Or even a Belgian-influenced one. It's flavorful, plenty strong, and doesn't veer off to the winey side. From the 16 oz can not dated.

Dark brown with brown highlights. The nose is classic Baltic Porter, clean as a whistle with a blend of malt, dark fruit, dark honey, chocolate, cocoa. Dusty cocoa, caramel. The palate opens rich and creamy, a rich, dark fruit heavy dark chocolate with caramel, toffee, burnt caramel on a clean lager base. The mid-palate has moderately sweeter caramel flavors but on a surprisingly light body. Fruity but drying on the finish. Delicious.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Dark brown pour, spotty beige head. Aroma is sweet, roasty. Taste adds fruity notes, prunes, plums and raisins. Finishes fast, medium weight body.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a fine, two finger dark khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, light cocoa, dark stone fruit, a hint of vanilla and some mineral notes. Flavor is semi-sweet dark toasted malt, milk chocolate, mild dried plums, dates , malted milk balls. Lingering malt, chocolate and dark dried fruit. Medium bodied with luxurious moderate creaminess and silky mouth feel. Now this is what I expect from a Baltic porter. The flavor is spot-on; a rich flavorful porter base with dark fruit notes. In addition the mouth feel is excellent, approaching a Nitro pour. I don't know how they pulled that off. They say this is "decocted for flavor maximization", but even after a web search and checking their page, I have no idea of what decocting has to do with brewing, but whatever the method is, it paid off here. Despite the quote, the flavor is actually a bit laid back, but the profile and balance are good. This is a stellar Baltic porter, an uncommon style in the best of time. Sure hope this becomes a regular offering.
