Purchased at Ocean Grove Cellars in January 2024. Drunk in August 2024.
L: In the glass, the beer is the definition of jet black. It's a solid obsidian presence sitting still in the glass. There's a large, fluffy, dark tan-coloured head.
S: The nose is an umami and woody whisky barrel beast with a nutty and creamy edge. You can tell there's a lot of booze waiting to knock you over when you finally dip your mouth into the glass. A musk note pops up as the beer warms; otherwise, things stay the boozy, savoury same.
T: While still cold, the barrel and its ethereal bourbon vanilla and woody notes dominate, and the beer kicks like a mule on the way down. Nuttiness, berry, and a tangy cola note appear as the beer warms, and even though the booze backs off a touch, there's a big warm glow deep down inside.
M: The mouthfeel is thick and unctuous, like drinking an alcoholic smoothie. There's almost no carbonation in the mouth and minimal carbonic kick on the way down, but the booze and the warmth it generates more than compensate for the lack of spritz.
O: Given time to warm up, this beer really comes into its own. The booze is a big player at first and remains a factor throughout. This is definitely one for slow sipping and most likely a lie down when all is done.
Cheers!

On-draught @ the brewery in Melbourne:
"Aged in bourbon barrels for 12 months." "Conditioned on pecan and vanilla pods." 13% ABV.
Subdued chocolate, faint pecan nut, faint oak derived vanillin, faint bourbon glow of booze and barrel, faint coconut, silky dark malt sweetness, goopy dark malt layers.
On the sweet side but also dry texturally, which helps keep it from feeling cloying. Faint earthiness lends limited bitterness.
It's not committed to every note... it's reticent to its detriment, not getting full flavours out of its constituent ingredients. I wouldn't call it muddled, but it's surprisingly shallow for all the barrel aging and flavour additions.
Doesn't hold its own against the Danish, Canadian, British, and (okay) American competition it's up against in the international arena, but it's off flavour free and there are many seeds of good ideas even if the execution fails to dazzle.
