Purchased from Chas Cole Cellarbrations in February 2024 and drunk in October that year.

L: The beer pours deep brown in the glass, with a thin, mocha-coloured head and a veritable sheet of tiny bubbles streaming up the glass.

S: The nose is strongly umami, booze and bourbon barrel. Vegemite or Marmite will come immediately to mind if you're an Aussie or, heaven forbid, English. I'm not sure that's good in a beer, but it is what it is...

T: In the mouth, it's very rich, with prominent caramel malt notes, followed by the wood and vanilla of the barrel. I always associate umami in beer with the smell of earth and soldier beetles; on cue, this one brings those images to the fore. The booze from the 10.8% ABV is evident on the swallow and retronasally - this beer won't be creeping up on you. A slight kick of bitterness on the swallow helps to balance the rich malt base and smooth the shape edges of the beer, but no doubt this sipper is meant for a roaring fire and slow consumption.

M: The beer's body is thick, and carbonation and bite on the swallow is minimal. The whiskey note on the swallow also tends to dry and thin out the beer at that point.

O: This is a beer for a moment and a mood. It has slow DNA and demands contemplation. I doubt anyone buying this beer thinks otherwise, and if they didn't, they'd be quickly disabused of that notion once the boozy notes and strong ABV took hold.

Cheers!
