Do you know what makes a good workout? Dumbells? Benchpress perhaps? A great workout is one that makes you feel the burn. Your post-workout on the other hand should be the reward. With this pastry imperial stout, you can enjoy the cooldown as much as (or more than) the workout.
In this Imperial Pastry Sour, you'll discover mango, banana, passionfruit, coconut, and vanilla flavours. It delivers a taste reminiscent of that breakfast smoothie you enjoyed long ago.

Purchased at Ocean Grove Cellars in Ocean Grove in January 2024 and drunk in August that year.

L: It looks exactly like apricot nectar: thick, orange, and utterly still. There is no head after the pour and no carbonation at all to be seen in the glass, but it's an imperial pastry sour, so this is how it's supposed to look...

S: It smells exactly like a mango and banana smoothie. The slightest whiff of booze is the only thing that tells it's not a smoothie. My kids would be shocked if they sipped this after smelling it.

T: All of the banana and mango in the nose are present in the mouth, along with zesty passionfruit. Booze kicks in on the swallow and is quite jarring after so much of the smooth fruitiness that had gone before. That booze note lingers long after the swallow, warmth settles quickly in my stomach, and no effort is made to hide the beer's 8% ABV. This tastes more like a cocktail than a beer, but it's very compelling, and I keep returning for more.

M: The mouthfeel is initially the very image of a mango and banana smoothie, but mild carbonation eventually kicks in, and there's a moderate carbonic kick on the swallow. Even with the carbonation, the smoothie analogy holds up.

O: My grandfather and possibly my old man would not recognise this as a beer, and it's very much pushing the boundary even in 2024. That said, it's a nice, tropical pastry sour and can't be accused of not nailing the brief.

Cheers!
