Doppelbock is from Munich, Germany and the original “liquid bread” of medieval brew monks and brew nuns brewed to drink during Lent.
Traditionally, a Doppelbock released for Lent is given the suffix “-ator.”
Grain husk and soft caramel malt aromas.
Rich and complex malt flavors including toffee, caramel, raisin, and maybe a faint touch of tart apple sweetness, and an even fainter bitterness around the edges that subside as the pour warms.

Earlier this snowy spring I had been taking a deep dive with some of the local doppelbocks -- Lupulin and Utepils -- as well as the imported classics, so I stopped by the tap room in the hopes of enjoying a pour of Abeiter's...but was foiled because the keg had been kicked earlier that day. Fortunately, I tracked down a crowler at France & 44, and a few weeks later, the first day above 70, I've finally got some time to give this some attention.
Poured into my TH tulip. Clear copper/amber with an impressive two finger head, impressive retention, decent lacing. The nose is solid: baked bread, bread crusts, some toffee, maybe a little brown sugar...good balance between the melanoidin and sweeter notes...maybe just a whiff of baker's chocolate. I don't get much in the way of spice or fruit, though I'm on the lookout. Taste is more of what I get from the nose, but the bready and bread crust and a little yeast notes linger a bit more, and I find that pretty interesting and enjoyable. All in all, it is a little one-note, but the note is good. It's moderately sweet but not syrupy, and towards the end it kind of dries out a little. In terms of body, it is middling, and the carbonation is low. There's next to no bitterness or lively edge.
Very enjoyable! All in all, for reasons that I feel might be a little idiosyncratic, I'd probably rank this one in the middle between Lupulin's, which I enjoyed the most, and Utepils, which I think I rated bit lower. Each one of these brewery's versions is distinctive, but they're also all pretty good, even though they fall a little short of the classics. But I'm not complaining.
