The Märzen that we’ve come to know here at Arbeiter over the last couple years is less intense in both color as well as residual sweetness that many other “American-Maerzen” Oktoberfests exhibit, yet still fits the Brewers Association style guidelines. While oftentimes, the more “Americanized” versions hover around the 6.0% ABV range, are a deep amber in color, and can finish with a fair amount of residual sweetness, Arbeiter’s Oktoberfest is more sessionable in the mid-5.0% ABV range and we rely on malt selection to convey the desired malt flavor. Part of this malt flavor is thanks to the BarkeⓇ heirloom summer barley variety from Weyermann Malting – it has a fuller body and mouthfeel than Weyermann’s spring barley, as well as enhanced malt sweetness and aroma.

16oz can. No dating information found.
Clear, pale amber colored body. Two fingers of white head with the pour, and this retreats to small islands and a ring.
Aroma of baked bread malts. Has a note of sugar pastry icing. Leaves behind some short strings of lacing.
Taste is strongly in the baked bread realm, along with cinnamon toast. Pleasant flavors of subdued sweet caramel and lighter floral hops. Long lasting aftertaste with slightly sweet baked bread.
Medium mouthfeel. Smooth and clean finish. Good carbonation.
Lots of caramel malts but stays away from being too sweet, so that session work can succeed.

Appearance: Pours a completely clear, medium orange/golden color with a strong white head. SRM of 9. (4.00)

Aroma: Strong aromas of caramel, baked bread, followed by light toast and floral notes. (4.00)

Flavor: Strong flavors of rich caramel, baked bread, some cinnamon toast. Caramel and toasted honey linger. (4.00)

Feel: Medium-bodied, Good carbonation. Finishes toasty, yet somewhat dry and clean. (4.25)

Compared to Drekker Hausterhausen 10/24: : Pours darker, similar aromas. Less honey. More caramel, toast and floral hoppiness. Winner: Arbeiter

to 3 Sheeps Oktoberfest 9/25: Pours lighter, similar aromas. More toasted bread. Less sweet caramel. Slightly less flavor.

to Revolution Oktoberfest 10/25: Pours identical. Similar aromas. More caramel, brown sugar. Less bread and yeast. Sweeter. Similar.

Overall: These guys are making some great German lagers from The Twin Cities, so picked up a few of their Oktoberfest Marzens. Great caramel, and bread flavors. Toasty yet dry and clean. Not overly sweet, yet complex and robust flavors. This is an excellent Oktoberfest beer. (Rating: 4.08)
