Presentation: Sampled at Najas in Redondo Beach during a high-octane very serious Saturday afternoon drinking session with a few LongBeachHopHeads and fellow BA LongBeachHopHead, he sounds like my brother eh!? Listed on the Najas white beer board as DUIPA2. This is, according to the talk I picked up on, a more highly hopped version of the regular DUIPA, with something like 30% extra hops and a strength which is into double digits. Served from the Beer Engine.
Appearance: Dark orange with a gentle soft amber haze. Off-white head is a winner from the Beer Engine. Two fingers thick with a creamy texture and a clinging lace that sticks to the glass sides with a fanatical resilience. High conditioning, a gentle tip of the Pint glass shows that this one is alive and well. Excellent appearance, all round serious looker and very easy on the eyes.
Nose: Pure hops, orange citrus with a pumping alcohol soaked tangerine slap in the middle. Raw yet with a refined distilled hop oil that lends some very fruity hop aromas with an immensely deep and thick feel to it. Gorgeous.
Taste: Rasping start with some fierce hop oils and a biting Satsuma orange oil soaking on the tongue. Big effort from the malts balance this to some extent but the hops punch through like an M1A1 Abrams. The finish has a little input from the more floral hops but its a dressing rather than the main course.
Mouthfeel: Big and Bold and Bloody Beautiful. The conditioning was maybe a little high but with the hop levels in this souped up Double IPA it didnt really matter. In fact the interplay between the effervescent carbonation and oily hops was rather sublime to be honest, the high hops and carbon dioxide levels work well together.
Drinkability: Utterly unbelievable that the regular DUIPA is 9.5% and that this souped-up version is even higher, double-digits. Dangerously quaffable easy to put down the throat not so hard to put a full glass down onto the table though.
Overall: This was the second time that I sampled the DUIPA2, I actually had it once before during a previous trip to Najas a few weeks ago. This time it was on sale alongside both the Russian River Plinys .and a few of the LBHHs and locals even dared to say that they preferred it over the Plinys on sale!!!! It is that good. A Sado-masochistic punishing treat that I reveled in, ooh hit me harder baby!!
This kicks ass big style. Well worth a ride out to Najas to sample this beauty!
