On tap 5/7/11 at JBC (and costing slightly more than the other brews on the taplist). Served in a pint tumbler. There is a half finger of bubbly head that is strangely reminiscent of dish soap. Retention was poor though a lot of carbonation could be seen through the glass. Lacing was non existent. The beer was copper colored.
The aroma is mildly floral with tangerine-like citrus notes and a caramel sweetness.
The taste is on the maltier side. It reminds me more of a traditional English IPA rather than a modern American take on the style. Honey sweetness cuts through the thickness. Hops are piney (simcoe perhaps), but mild. A bitter finish is tame but persistent.
As the malt bill is substantial, this beer has a nice heavy body. The carbonation is moderate, and overall it has a nice feel. That is probably the strong suit of this otherwise slightly below average IPA. Jamesport is on the right track here with the malt bill; with a tougher hop profile this could be a pretty decent beer. As is, it feels like an IPA, but bites like an APA. Maybe they were simply going for accessibility, but I just found it to be a bore.

I don't give a Schlitz about Jamesport IPA.

Reviewed on 6/27/2010. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear orange with a small white head. Aroma of light fruits, jam, and malt. Flavor of toasted wheaty malt, floral hops, and bitter hops in the finish. More of a pale ale than an IPA but a pretty decent drinker.

Notes from 5/30/10
The pint is served to me with a frothy white head and thick lacing where the head had been. A bit of light reveals a golden yellow hue with a pinch of green.
The scent is a bit weak with a slight mix of caramel malt and lemon hops.
The hop side of this IPA is a mixture of lemon and pine. A good amount of malt comes through in the middle and end to balance the brew. This is well balanced and solid.
Medium in body. Evidence of dry hopping: Good head retention, solid lacing, a hue of green, and a bit of drying in the aftertaste.
This is very drinkable and surpassed my expectations for a relatively unknown brewery.
