Stepping out of their common British dark ales and applying those flavors to appease the chocoholics, their Chocolate Stout is subtle, drinkable and just savory enough to get the cocoa job done.
Dark brown and hazy with a muddy appearance, a scant froth greets the rim before enticing the nose with a rich scent of raw and roasted cocoa nib, vanilla, caramel and cream. As its first sip reveals much of the same, a broad flavor of toffee, malted milk ball, nougat and vanilla each bring a sweet and savory taste.
While the stout is relaxed as much as it is robust, the moderate alcohol and restrained body allows the middle palate to be daringly refreshing for such robust flavor. As the flavors shift from sweet to savory, more coffee, nutty and toasted character supplants much of the sweetness before chasing the late palate into a fading dryness of coffee, boadly bitter hops and a linger of cola.
Medium-full in body, the ale finishes decidedly malty but with a drying hop balance followed by a longer afterglow of cocoa and nuttiness.
