Got this from Emma and Terry last summer. Cheers!
From a 375ml double f*ckin’ waxed bottle into a tulip
English barleywine aged 9 months in bourbon, rum and sherry barrels, blended, and aged again 9 months on fresh bourbon barrels
Special note: Whoever thought wax on beer bottles was “cool” back in 2010 should be rounded up and unceremoniously executed. Yes, this is a call for violence.
APPEARANCE: Pours our murky brown and yields no real head. Muddy dark brown body and no carbonation evident. Looks like some kind of sewage water gone right.
SMELL: Lovely. Bold bourbon and rum aromas, brown sugar, molasses, caramel and toffee malts, sugary dates and some light tobacco. Aromatic and enticing.
TASTE: Lots of barrel character, with bourbon, rum, oak flavors, some sweet caramel and toffee, as well as brown sugar up front. Lots of booze at the swallow, moving into a big finish of barrel, sweet malty flavors, brown sugar and hints of tobacco, some raisins and dates, as well as lots of alcohol linger on the palate.
PALATE: Medium-full body and low levels of carbonation. Silky and syrupy on the palate, lots of weight, goes down slick and finishes very sticky on the palate. Lots of heat lingers.
OVERALL: Besides the absurd wax job and strike-out-looking look of this one, the brew satisfies on so many levels. Great nose, lovely flavors, and a menacing feel make the several injuries while opening worthwhile. I would suggest tracking one of these down if you can, and be sure to grab a sledge hammer and a bucket on the way home from work. Well worth the effort. Thanks again, guys!
