West coast style India Pale Ale. Half ram, half man - and unlike our deliciously balanced West coast style IPA - the Billiwhack Monster is an experiment gone wrong. This terrestrial terror from California keeps hikers on high alert. But here in Texas, we can relax. Our West coast style IPA is inspired by this creature and boasts piney, spicy and earthy notes - an experiment gone alright alright alright.

There is no canned on date on this can. It just says "WEST GOAT IPA BW123" -- maybe best by 1/23? Unclear.
Pours a crystal clear copper in color with average carbonation and a half inch of frothy head with solid retention. Plenty of lacing on the glass as you drink. A bit darker than expected, hoping that lends a bit of malt balance.
Aroma is melon, pine and citrus hops with a sweet, honey and toasted bread maltiness to round it out. There are some herbal/vegetable notes in there as well. Overall a bit sweet and juicy/soapy. Not quite what I was expecting, but intriguing. Note: as this one warms, the lighter fruit/wine notes start to come out a bit more.
Fascinating. At first, it does hit much like a West coast style IPA with ample pine and citrus (mostly grapefruit) with a nice roasted maltiness to balance it out. But the longer it sits on the tongue, it starts going a bit fruity and sour/tart and finishes with a bitter lemony, herbal pear kind of flavor, almost wine-like. I can't say I've ever had an IPA like this before. It is certainly complex, but I'm not sure these flavors work for me. I was definitely put off by the first one, but I'm warming up to it a bit. I am, however, definitely not a fan of the finish.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied, although fairly light and zesty on the tongue. There is a bit of chewiness but it does thin and dry after the swallow.
This is a strange one. I guess I should have learned my lesson by now not to trust Texas breweries labeling their beers as "West Coast Style IPA" as to date I've had maybe one that actually fit that profile. Still, leaving that aside, this is certainly a complex IPA offering, but it comes off a bit more like "half IPA half sour", and I don't really care for sours. But if you enjoy sours and IPAs, this might be worth trying. Definitely had better from this brewery. The only other beer that really comes to mind with a similar profile is the Western Mutant IPA by Oskar Blues. Cheers!
