June 2019: 500 ml swingtop bottle, from Det Gode Brygg, Sandnes. ABV is 4.7%. Golden colour, large white head. Aroma of malts, honey, flowers and grass. Moderately sweet but still refreshing flavour, notes of malts and honey, hints of caramel, moderate hops.
Earlier Rating: 10/20/2005 Total Score: 3.4 500 ml bottle, many thanks to Gr0ve who supplied it to me from SmartClub Norway. Golden colour, moderate head. Moderate carbonation, good mouthfeel. Pleasant malty sweet aroma with strong notes of butterscotch and honey. Flavour has also butterscotch notes, but also a decent hoppy bitterness well balanced with the malts. Very drinkable.

Served on-draught into a .5 litre weissbier glass (which I thought was EXTREMELY strange at the time) at a bar in Germany. Reviewed from notes taken June 2010.
A: Pours a three finger head of nice cream, good thickness, and pretty decent retention. Body colour is a strangely hazy light gold - indicative of a lack of filtration. I'm no style expert, but why is this German lager so hazy?
Sm: Cream and barley. A light strength aroma. Pleasant.
T: Sharp barley foundation with only cream atop. Any hopping is minimal. Little malt character. Very imbalanced, with a bad unrewarding climax. Poorly built.
Mf: Unnaturally dry, coarse, and sharp from overcarbonation. Doesn't suit its own awkward flavours. What's going on here? A hell should be smooth and wet.
Dr: Not at all drinkable. Priced highly by local standards and low quality. Avoid.

Deep gold with just a loose layer of white froth. Floral honey on the nose with some butterscotch; no real hops.
Caramel and pear cake malts with grass, hay and ginger hops.
Butter cookie finish and herbal linger. Medium, chewy, semi-dry.
Very much on the sweet end of the style, and doesn't really have the hops to cut that. Also lacks the fizz to lift the body, a bit dead in the glass. No outright sour notes, but not much going on here.

Half litre bottle, also known as Kraus Lager Hell. Amber colour, very clear, lot's of bubbles, big foamy head which doesn't stay. Grassy citrus smell. Sweet taste with a slightly bitter finish, malty, hints of grain. Normal palate. Overall this is a solid Dortmunder, a fairly easy drinker.

Sampled on-tap at the brewery/pug in Hirschaid, Germany.
This lager poured a clear, amber color with white foam that settled to a few millimeters thickness. The smell was hoppy with some maltiness, and a faint vegetal aroma. The taste was malty and nicely hoppy, with the hops especially coming out in the finish. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium to medium-light body and good carbonation. This was a good, enjoyable lager.
