A thin veil of creamy white froth hovers over this jet-black beer. The pour had a dark chocolate quality. When held to the light, faint dark chocolate highlights could be seen through the bottom of the glass. Elusive spots of lace form on the walls of a Harp nonic glass.
The aroma bursts with baker's chocolate, followed by sweet dark roasted malt. Chocolate comes back late, while the roasted malt transforms to roasted black coffee. A light note of figs was also present.
Light sweetness and bitterness are well balanced. Both build slightly with warmth in this beer that is all about the roasted malt.
A medium body with no alcohol and soft, woolly texture. Light astringency is lifted by soft, yet ample, carbonation.
This is well suited for relaxing or casual conversation with friends. I enjoyed it with Stilton on a cool mid-Autumn afternoon.
