Appearance: Pours with a robust, somewhat coarse light ran head with good retention. Before a strong light at the narrowest point of the glass, dark amber highlights can be seen, as well as profuse streams of small, slow-rising bubbles. The lacing is thick and leaves scattered archipelagoes of foam on the glass wall.
Aroma: Intense, but very pleasant aroma of dark fruit, particularly raisins, also ripe dark plum, rustic brown bread and sweet alcohol. With a bit of warming, a striking ripe banana note presents. The alcohol note is very pronounced for an ABV of a mere six percent.
Taste: On tasting, the dark fruits are immediately evident, as well as ripe banana, though there is less of the latter than the aroma would suggest. Rich dark bread notes follow, with the taste and warmth of the alcohol evident at mid-taste. As the taste draws to a close, there is a mild earth and wood. The taste draws to a close with a mild flourish of brown sugar and molasses.
Mouth feel: Soft and very full, with a bit of mildly sharp carbonation.
Drinkability/notes: A surprising example, this is far better than it could reasonably be expected of this modest offering. It is, far and way, the best of the several State of Brewing offerings that I have been able to try. Try this if you have the chance.
Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce aluminum can, served in a La Fin du Monde tulip.

Belgian Style Dark Ale has a thin, beige, fizzing-away head and a dark red-brown, translucent appearance, with no lacing. The aroma is of dark, spiced brown bread crust, dark raisin, prunes, and dates. The flavor is similar, with no bitterness and minimal sweetness. Belgian Style Dark Ale has a medium body and a very dry finish.

From the can in the 2022 Aldi Bier Advent Calendar, it pours a clear dark reddish brown in color with a modest light brown head soon dissipating to a thin ring. The nose gets caramel and roasted malt. The mouth gets the same with notes of roasted sugars coming through - lightly roasted malt with some roast/burnt sugar coming through. It seems a bit thin as well.
