An obscure malt-forward beer style from Dusseldorf, Altbier (alt means "old") shares lineage with its cousin Kolsch in that it is fermented warm with ale yeast before being conditioned cold like a lager. Our Altbier uses 100% Barvarian ingredients, is unfined/unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and lagered for eight weeks.

"Nose art" came into its own in the late 30's and early 40's as air crews expressed themselves by painting images pn their aircrafts that paid tribute to those that they loved most. Likenesses of famous celebrities of the era were painted with pride and spawned thousands of more personal inspirations that the pilots would name their aircraft after.
One can only imagine the binding connection these brave souls had with their aircrafts. We forever thank and remember these brothers in arms and their flying maidens.

Poured from a howler purchased at Collective Beer Shop in YYC.

Appearance - Pours cloudy honey brown with three fingers of frothy off-white head.

Smell - Spicy/earthy/leafy hops (Saaz), bready and biscuity malts, mild nuttiness and toasted notes, fruity esters, earthy yeast.

Taste - Mild to moderate bitterness from the hops initially, followed by the bready and biscuity malts. Sort of a pumpernickel bread quality to it. The fruity esters and earthy yeast rounds out the brew but is heavily dominated by the bready malts and pumpernickel notes.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Spicy hop and bready malt/pumpernickel notes in the aftertaste lingers.

Overall - A beer that showcases the balance between the sharp bitterness of the hops and the bready malts. Very easy drinking and enjoyable pumpernickel flavour.

4.1% ABV at time of rating - gather later iteration 5.1%.

Pours a clear reddish mahogany colour with a finger of beige/light tan head.
Malty on the nose - bready - pumpernickel - caramel and toffee notes, dark fruit and earthy hops.
Deliciously smooth and sweet caramel malt, bready with dark fruit flavours - plummy - there is a distinct earthy hop bitterness at the back that punctuates the flavour nicely.
Exceptionally smooth medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation leaving with a caramel infused earthy bittersweetness.
Definitely worth repeat!
