Looking for a beer to sip by a fire, look no further. This beer was brewed with copious amounts of pale malt and boiled for 24 hours on our direct fire brew kettle to caramelize the sugars into velvety caramel goodness that balances with the higher alcohol content.

“Old Ward” -- A Barrel Aged Barleywine, Athentic Brewery
Bottle undated, purchased at the brewery 8/11/2024. Consumed on 8/15/2024 in a tulip glass.
Look
Deep brown, almost black, with a touch of ruby. Impermeable to light. Thin, khaki head that quickly dissipates. Minimal lacing.
Smell
Not overpowering, but notes of toffee, sugared candies, and spice.
Taste
Follows the nose, but more intense and complex. Malts give notes of toffee, sweet molasses, brown sugar, spice (clove, perhaps), and a little oak. Very subtle bourbon. Very little hop presence. Upon further sips, and with greater deliberation, notes of vanilla bean and burnt caramel, and fruits like baked apple, banana bread, and raisins.
Feel
Not much carbonation -- perhaps even a little flat -- with medium mouthfeel. No heat from the booze.
Overall
A very mellow and enjoyable sipper that opens up as it warms. With its minimal hop presence and fruit-forward malts, this barleywine is more in line with the English-style, opposed to the American-style. Not clear how old this bottle is, but would prefer to have experienced on draft. Have enjoyed this beer before and will definitely have again -- certainly one of the better barrel-aged barleywines I’ve encountered to come out of a local craft brewery. Yum!
