Very dark brown with dark cola highlights. A big, fluffy, light-chestnut head reaches four inches before slowly fading to one-half inch, transitioning through rocky and settling as a dense seafoam. Patches of lace are left as a webbing down the entire face of a Pretentious Glass Company Dimpled Mug.
The initial aroma is very similar to black coffee, however, that dissipates, leaving oats, soap, and a light chocolate.
The flavor has a light sweetness to counter the dry, mild and dark roasted malt. Cola lingers in the background. The finish is long and astringent. Cold brewed black coffee and roasted bitterness build continuously with warmth.
The body is medium to full. I can't decide if the texture is oily or just wet cotton. Alcohol is as expected. Prickly carbonation stays alive through to the next sip.
My first impressions were that this was more of an English Stout than and Oatmeal Stout. The first few sips certainly held that impression, however vague it already is. The oatmeal texture and aroma did show through once I began thinking about it. This is a good beer, which I enjoyed while reading about the cultural history of Farmhouse beers.
