Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown slight light transmission in the glass and a half finger light khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, whiskey, rye, dark dried fruit, bakers chocolate and light coffee. Flavor is dark toasted malt, rye whiskey, light woody oak, light chocolate and dried plum; a light tart cherry note in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A solid barrel aged stout with fine rye whiskey character. I was torn between the whiskey barreled version and this one, but a sampler convinced me to go this way; the rye was a more interesting flavor. The malt is a bit thin for big barrel aged stout, but I've not tasted the base stout to know if that is a product of barreling. It supports and exhibits the rye whiskey nicely, however. There is an interesting lighter fruit/cherry note in the finish, perhaps from the whiskey. Chocolate present, but subdued. A well brewed and barreled stout from this new-to-me brewery. I'll be trying their barleywine in the next few weeks and look forward to it.
