This is a Vic Secret, Mosaic, and Astra dry hopped lager that exemplifies the confluence of characteristics of an IPA and a lager. This is our second installment of our experimental series which breaks the myth that lagers are one dimensional; and we couldn’t think of anybody better to do it with than our friends from Hop Butcher.
“Und Hopfen” (German for “and hops”) was a name inspired by the Reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law that dictated what constituted a true beer. Typically, the law would state “Hopfen und malz” meaning hops and malt, but due to the fact that this beer features an incredible bouquet of hop varietals, we wanted to emphasize the “Hopfen” part.

Pours a gorgeous golden color that features the slightest modicum of hop haze and sports a REALLY sudsy white head. This indeed looks like a cross between an IPA and a lager. Absolutely beautiful.
The Mosaic hops literally leap from the can as you pour, with dank citrus notes of grapefruit and tangerine, and a nice ripe berry note. This definitely leans to the IPA side on the nose.
The taste similarly leans toward IPA, with the previously referenced tangerine and grapefruit flavors most prominent, and the berry flavors at the back of the palate and a nice, subtle caramalt flavor.
The mouthfeel, though, represents the lager side with a medium, clean, and crisp mouthfeel associated with the best lagers.
I’m not typically the biggest fan of the IPL style, but this is executed exceptionally well, IMHO. I’d try this again in a heartbeat.

This was a collaboration between two faves of mine and I was very curious how this old world meets new world come out. It cam e out pretty good. Lots of hops in the aroma and up front in the taste. The backend was as smooth as their original lager and finished nice and dry. Very drinkable.

An India Pale Lager hopped with astra, vic secret and mosaic.
Pours a crystal clear golden color. Three finger sudsy white head forms and then dissipates leaving just a thin layer of velvety foam on top of the beer. Aroma has notes of grass, ripe cantaloupe, dank herbal notes, green grapes, and white peach. Some light sweet bready malts underling the hops. There is a mild sweetness to the beer as well.
Taste follows the nose with the hops dominating the flavor profile. Notes of grass, peach, mango, cantaloupe, white wine and white peach. Towards the back end you get some dried alfalfa, dank weed, and grassy bitterness. There is an underlying light white bread malt base that provides the canvass for the hops to shine on. Feel is light, smooth, and rounded. Light carbonation.
Im not, generally speaking, a fan of IPLs, but this one is actually pretty good. The hops work well with the underlying lager. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this one.
