Nuremberg Rotbier style amber lager

This was a collaboration that emerged from the shared intrigue of decoction mashes between Is/Was Brewing , purveyors of some of the finest saisons, and us. Saisons and lagers are fundamentally different: saisons relying heavily on the complex esters and phenols produced by the yeast during fermentation, and lagers favoring neutral and “clean” fermentation character. In spite of their differences, they are similar in their traditional European roots and their tendency toward dryness.

So, Mike of Is/Was and Tom combined their curiosities into a unique brewing experiment. They wondered how a double decoction mash would translate in a saison, and set out to create an opportunity to present two different beers using the same wort, whose only difference was the yeast and fermentation temperatures.

Had on tap. Talk about a style I haven't had a lot of, probably less than 10, but man this was good. Crystal clear orangey amber body with a full white head and sporadic lacing. Freshly baked bread opens up to other smells of caramel, grassy hops, honey dipped cherry, and rustic grains. Taste is much the same, not as sweet maybe some peach thrown in, yeast has a mineral hint in there I think, just plays with the palate each sip. It does all of this while maintaining a light and smooth body, sneaky robust yeast plays off of the light malt, sneaky full. This is beautiful and unique

I had this on draft 4/19/23 @ the Hopleaf.

See-through amber appearance.

Small white head; frothy, tree-rung lace remained.

Rustic grain, mild toffee & faint berry notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Rustic grain & mild caramel flavors up front; faint cherry notes on the finish.

Robust & quite tasty; I'd have another!

Pours an absurdly beautiful copper color that is crystal clear and props up a creamy light tan head that laces the glass nicely and provides a cap on the body of the beer the entire journey through this beer.

The nose is led by a rich bready malt note as expected by the color, but there’s also plenty of grassy hop aromas, a nice dollop of caramel - and some stone fruit, specifically cherries. I did NOT see that coming.

The bready flavor struts its stuff first and is absolutely delicious, with the grassy flavor following, but the showstopper is the caramel/cherry combo pack, which elevates this to world class level, IMHO.

The mouthfeel is crisp and dry, making it very easy to crush the crowler. Goldfinger is a hidden gem absolutely SLAYING the lager game.

Pours a lightly cloudy amber color. Thick, frothy off-white head forms on the beer, lingers a while, then slowly, almost imperceptibly dissipates until no residual head remains. Aroma has notes of sweet bready malts, doughy malts, earthy straw notes, and some subtle grassy hops.

Taste follows the nose with those bready, doughy malts coming through up front. There is a light honey sweetness to the flavor profile that lingers. There are notes of straw and some grassy hops on the back end.

Overall its a very drinkable, tasty lager. Kind of a cross between a helles and a vienna lager?
