We brewed this beer in collaboration with our friends from Fonta Flora. A Steinbier refers to a brewing technique used in the Middle Ages that uses the heat from hot rocks to perform the boiling portion of beer production. In addition to granite, we dropped some basalt Antarctic rocks into the wort, which serves as the inspiration for the name: “Antarktis.” The resulting beer has a unique malt profile due to the caramelization of the sugars on surface of the rocks. The malt bill for this beer was a cross between a Marzen and a single bock, providing deep caramel notes, subtle fruits, and a pleasant herbal hop quality from the Polish hops we used. It was horizontally lagered and naturally carbonated to provide a smoothness that makes this 5.8% abv beer drink very easy.
