Pours a deep, dark mahogany coloration with a medium, fizzy head. Smells of bready, roasted malt with hoppy notes of grapefruit and pine. Hint of of licorice as well. Taste is dominated by roasted malt, licorice and a hint of coffee, but nicely balanced by hoppy, somewhat zesty citrus notes of grapefruit and tangerine. There's also a light, herbal pine note to this. Finishes with a medium bitterness and a bit of pine lingering in the aftertaste. Medium body and carbonation.
This really impressed me coming from M&F. You'd think this would be a gimmicky, unbalaned mess, given that it's brewed with 30 different types of hops and malt, but not at all. Very nice, well-balanced Black IPA that hides it's ABV well and is just a pleasure to drink.
